The Department of Public Health and Exercise Science (PHES) offers undergraduate and graduate degrees for students interested in working in dynamic and growing health and wellness professions. PHES has access to state-of-the-art learning labs, engaged faculty and meaningful experiential learning.

Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science

Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science

App State’s Exercise Science program (BS) prepares students to work in a variety of settings including the fitness/wellness industry or sport and human performance while other students pursue admission to graduate programs in Exercise Science, health professions such as medicine (MD/DO, PA), therapy (PT, OT) or Athletic Training. Undergraduate students are trained to examine the human body and understand the effects of physical activity on its function and adaptation. App State students learn through hands-on class activities, laboratories and internships.

App State’s Public Health program (BS) prepares students to work in diverse public health settings, nonprofit agencies and/or to matriculate into graduate programs for public health or other health science professions. Students are trained to help populations and communities improve their health through behavioral change interventions, engage in social action through community and coalition building, lead in the promotion of environmental and systems change and advocate for the inclusion of health in all public policies.

Master of Science in Exercise Science

App State’s graduate Exercise Science (MS) program prepares students to work in a variety of settings and offers three concentrations: Research, Clinical Exercise Physiology or Strength and Conditioning. The Research concentration prepares students for doctoral study or laboratory research. The Clinical Exercise Physiology concentration prepares students for careers in clinical exercise physiology, to transition into Ph.D./Professional degree programs (MD/DO, PA, OT, PT) or pursue clinical research. The Strength and Conditioning concentration prepares students for careers in strength and conditioning, sports performance or private industry.

Master of Public Health

App State’s Master of Public Health (MPH) is an online program that provides a grounding in the theories and core disciplines of public health including epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy, and the social and behavioral sciences. The program (which will begin in Fall 2024) prepares students to work in a variety of settings such as the CDC, local and state-level health departments, nonprofit agencies and/or to matriculate into doctoral programs for public health such as the DrPH. Applications for the first cohort will open in Fall 2023.
