The Human Performance Lab under the direction of Dr. Alan Utter, Department of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science, is providing the following tests to assess cardiorespiratory fitness, resting metabolic rate, and body composition for individuals from the community, and ASU faculty, staff, and students. Call 828-262-3047 to sign up: testing is each week, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, from 3:00-5:00 pm in Holmes Convocation Center, Room 54.
VO2max-Treadmill Test--45 minutes
Community: $75; ASU Faculty/Staff: $50; ASU Students: $25
This is a sophisticated test using expensive equipment to assess the fitness of your heart and lungs. It is considered the best physical fitness test available, and reveals "the truth" about the shape of your body. Please note that this test is only for "apparently healthy" individuals. We cannot test people with heart disease or those at high risk for it. Avoid eating for 3-4 hours prior to this test, and come with your exercise clothes and good walking/running shoes.
Resting Metabolic Rate--30 minutes
Community: $25; ASU Faculty/Staff: $20; ASU Students: $10
The resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the energy you burn each day to keep alive. In other words, it is the energy you expend when sitting to keep your heart and lungs working, and your body temperature at normal levels. There is evidence that lower than normal resting metabolic rates increase the risk of becoming overweight. In this test, we will measure your RMR, and let you know if it is below or above normal levels. Avoid eating or exercising for 3-4 hours prior to this test.
Underwater Body Fat Test--30 minutes
Community: $15; ASU Faculty/Staff: $10; ASU Students: $8
This is the "gold standard" test for measuring body fat levels. If you want to know exactly how fat you are, then this is the test for you. Please bring a swim suit and towel, and avoid eating for 3-4 hours prior to the test.
Bioelectrical Impedance Body Fat Test--15 minutes
Community: $8; ASU Faculty/Staff: $5; ASU Students: $5
This is a quick, but fairly accurate test for measuring body fat levels. Although not quite as valid as underwater weighing, it still gives you a good idea of your body composition. Avoid eating for 3-4 hours prior to the test, and come normally hydrated.
Dexa Body Fat Test--30 minutes
Community $25; ASU Faculty/Staff $20; ASU Students $15
Another"gold standard" test for measuring body fat levels. This test, however, is easy to take and only requires 10 minutes of time while you lie down during a short scanning procedure.
All Tests Combined for Complete Physical Fitness Assessment--120 minutes
Community: $100; ASU Faculty/Staff: $70; ASU Students: $35
For a complete assessment of your heart/lung fitness and body composition, with counseling to meet personal goals, consider the entire package of four tests at a special price.
